Courage or Cowardice: Uvalde and Greenwood

“If I profess with the loudest voice and clearest exposition every portion of the truth of God except precisely that little point which the world and the devil are at that moment attacking, I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be professing Christ. Where the battle rages, there the loyalty of the soldier is proved, and to be steady on all the battlefield besides is mere flight and disgrace if he flinches at that point.” -Martin Luther

Courage in this day and age is the willingness to do and say the RIGHT thing regardless of the cost. And there will be a cost. Sometimes personally, sometimes corporately.

If you say the right thing you may get kicked off social media.

If you say the right thing you may lose your job.

If you say the right thing you may get kicked out of school.

If you do the right thing, the consequences may even be worse as we will see in some of the stories today.

Jesus promised us the world would rise up against his followers. “Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name” Matthew 24:9.

Paul warned that even pastors would lie about God, theology, truth and any number of other false teachings. “I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them” Acts 20:29-30 4:3-4

Jesus also reminded us that we do not have to fear: You WILL have troubles, TAKE HEART, I have overcome the world – John 16:33

So today, we look at several stories, some exemplary of courage that we can draw from, others that we need to learn what not to do. All in all, we know that times are hard and they will require strong, moral, courageous men, to counter the weak, aggressive, immoral cowards that seek to destroy with violence that which they hate.

Courage is not simply one of the virtues, but it is the form of every virtue at its testing point. CS Lewis in the Screwtape letters.
